Projects and memoirs

First year students must submit a project during the second semester, which involves writing a short essay and a short oral presentation. On the other hand, the whole of the second semester of the second year is devoted to a memoir together with an oral presentation of the work done.

During the first year project, called Travail d'Étude et de Recherche (TER), students work in pairs on a topic suggested by a teacher. Usually, the list of topics offered is made available near the beginning of the second semester (January or early February) but most of the work involved will be done between April and June after the second semester exam session. The oral presentation lasts about 30 minutes. Each student is awarded 10 ECTS for successfully completing the TER.

During the second year, each student must submit his/her own memoir. The memoir is written under the supervision of a university teacher or professor. Often, the purpose of the memoir is to introduce the student to the circle of ideas which later become the subject of the his/her PhD thesis. Successful completion of the memoir and of the oral presentation also enables the student to validate the second semester and be awarded 30 ECTS.

The majority of students will prepare their project and memoir under the supervision of members of the Laboratoire de Mathématiques Nicolas Oresme (LMNO), but those intending to reorient towards computer science have the possibility of working under the supervision of a member of the Groupe de Recherche en Informatique, Imagerie, Instrumentation de Caen (GREYC). Exceptionally, a student may be permitted to prepare the project or memoir in some other research laboratory.

In certain cases students intending a career in industry may be permitted to replace the project or memoir by work experience or industrial training.
